HOW DO I GET THOSE GREAT UPPER ARMS?

Remember as a teenager looking at your Mom in her sleeveless shirts and there was this excess skin waving in the air!  Silently, you say to yourself, I’ll never have that happen to me… well, girl look again!!  With all the media attention on Michelle Obama’s great looking arms, the nagging question is “how can my arms look like that?”

If you have concentrated on firming up the triceps in your upper arms by diligently using hand weights, you may improve the appearance and give definition to the arms.  However, if you have unsightly sagging skin on the upper arms due to aging, genetics or weightloss, you may be a candidate for Brachioplasty, also known as an “arm lift” which is designed to reduce or eliminate excess skin from the upper arms.

The procedure is performed under general anesthesia.  In order to remove excess skin, an incision is made that will run from above the elbow to the armpit.  The incision is placed in the most inconspicuous location but some scarring will always be visible which is an important consideration for patients.

The underlying supportive tissue is tightened and reshaped with internal sutures.  Finally, the skin is smoothed over the new contour of your arm.  Your incision will be closed with absorbable sutures and/or sutures that will be need to be removed within 1 to 2 weeks following your arm lift.

Following the procedure, you will be bandaged and your arms may be wrapped in an elastic bandage or compression garment to minimize swelling.  You may also have a small thin tube temporarily placed under the skin to drain any excess blood or fluid that may collect.  Incision length and pattern depend on the amount and location of excess skin to be removed.  This will be decided during your consultation with Dr. Herrold.

The smoother, tighter contours that result from brachioplasty are visible almost immediately following your procedure, although initial results will be somewhat obscured by swelling and bruising.  Your new, shapely and toned upper arms are dramatically improved both in appearance and feel.  The results of arm lift surgery will be long-lasting, providing you maintain a stable weight and general fitness.

The popularity of this procedure has increased along with the growing number of people who have lost massive amounts of weight either through dieting or bariatric surgery or lap banding.

Dr. Herrold may also suggest having Vaser®Liposuction in conjunction with the brachioplasty procedure to remove any excess fat in the area, before removing the excess skin.  This can be discussed during your consultation.  Give us a call and see if brachioplasty is the procedure for you!

DYSPORT VS BOTOX?

Up until the recent FDA approval of Dysport™, Botox®Cosmetic has cornered the market and is the number one cosmetic procedure for women and men, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS).  Although new to the United States, Dysport™ has been used overseas for many years.

So which product is right for you?  Both Dysport™ and Botox®Cosmetic are botlinum toxin Type A.  They are both strategically injected in the face to temporarily relax facial muscles thus reducing fine lines and wrinkles on the forehead, between the brows, around the eyes and mouth.  Both products claim to last four to six months, however, this varies from patient to patient.  One major difference, Dysport™ is less expensive.  They both can give your face a refreshed and rejuvenated appearance.  So it really comes down to personal preference.

The injection process is technique specific and requires an artistic eye which is very important when facial sculpturing or performing liquid facelifts.  We are very fortunate to have Brande Daniels, B.S.N., R.N. on our staff.  She has received extensive and specialized aesthetic training in Dysport™, Botox®Cosmetic and the hyaluronic acid dermal fillers, such as Radiesse®, Restylane®, Perlane®, Juvederm® and ArteFill®.  Any side effects of any of these products will be discussed during your consultation.

Brande received her degree from the University of Texas at Tyler and is the Clinical and Surgical Coordinator for Dr. Herrold.  She strives to make the injection experience as effortless and comfortable as possible for her paients.  “Trust your face to experienced hands”

CAN I GET AN ALTERNATIVE TO OBAGI OVER-THE-COUNTER?

There are many over-the-counter products on the market that promise to restore your skin back to its natural-looking, younger and healthy skin you once had.  While many of them are good, they are designed to work only on the stratum corneum or the skin’s surface.  You’re basically just treating your skin, not changing it.  Prescriptive-based skin care systems can only be dispensed by a physician and triggers a therapeutic cascade that makes your skin look and act younger and healthier.

As your skin ages, the turnover of skin cells slows significantly, throwing off the balance between the growth of healthy new skin cells and the “shedding” of old damaged skin cells.  Collagen and elastin begin to slowly break down, causing the skin to lose its resilience, resulting in fine lines, wrinkles and sagging.  Daily exposure to UV light accelerates this aging process and causes uneven pigmentation.  In order to correct this, you need a product that will penetrate to the deepest layer of the skin to correct signs of premature aging.  Your skin will begin producing normal, healthy cells, distribute melanin more evenly and stimulate collagen and elastic production.  Over-the-counter products do not offer this depth of treatment.

Also, a study documented in the Cosmetic Dermatology Journal evaluated the Obagi®Nu-Derm skin care regimen against other products and found that this tretinoin/hydroquinone-based system, significantly reduced perioral (around the mouth) and perocular (around the eyes) fine wrinkles, as well as reducing mottled hyperpigmentation, improved clarity, swallowness, and laxity and tactile roughness.

By the time you invest in several over-the-counter skin care products, you probably have spent more than if you had invested only in a prescriptive-based skin product, such as Obagi®NuDerm and have more room in your bathroom cabinets!

With conscientioius use of this system, you and others will notice significant improvement in the way your skin looks and feels.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BBL AND IPL THERAPY?

Basically, there is no difference between the two, they use broad spectrum or intense light to treat the skin due to excessive sun exposure.  This energy is delivered in precise controlled bursts that only affect the target tissue while leaving surrounding tissues intact.  Broadband light (BBL) utilizes the Sciton laser pulsed light to effectively treat the widest range of skin conditions, i.e., Solar Lentigines (freckles), Age Spots, Brown Spots, Birthmarks, Rosacea, hyper pigmentation, spider veins (telanglectasia), facial veins and broken capillaries.  Also, it may be used in the treatment for acne.

As our skin ages due to excessive sun exposure and the decreased production of collagen, skin rejuvenation with Broad Band Light Laser Therapy (BBL) helps you maintain a fresher and brighter younger appearance.  BBL can make your face look smoother by removing age spots and diffuse redness and by improving your skin texture.  Uneven pigmentation can also be reduced.  BBL treatments are gentle, non-invasive and safe.  No anesthesia is required and there is virtually no downtime and makeup can be applied right away.  You will immediately notice that your skin will have a more even tone and smoother look and feel.  It is important to avoid tanning (sun, tanning beds or self tanning creams) before and during the treatment period, as your tanned skin will absorb more light and will make the treatment less effective.

The most popular areas treated are the face, neck, upper chest, back of the hands, arms and legs.  Generally, we suggest you wait three to four weeks between each treatment to produce the best possible results.  You may require additional treatments depending on your particular condition.
