“MOMMY MAKEOVER” PROCEDURE – RISING IN POPULARITY

According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) or more recently referred to as the “Mommy Makeover” procedure by the media, has become the most sought after post pregnancy procedure, developing 5 times faster than any other cosmetic procedure among women.

During pregnancy, one of the things that occur is a relaxation of the skin and muscles of the abdominal wall.  As this process occurs, the main supporting muscles called the rectus abdominous stretch longitudinally as well as separating in the midline.  Thus, the abdominal wall looses much of its natural muscle tone, and in many cases there is a slight excess of skin in the lower abdomen below the belly button, sometimes more depending on your weight gain during pregnancy.

The abdominoplasty or tummy tuck procedure can surgically correct the laxity of the abdominal wall.  It is generally performed through an incision made just above the pubic hairline.  Through this incision, the muscles of the abdominal wall are tightened by sewing the rectus muscles together in the midline.  In addition, the excess skin which is always present can be removed at the same time to give you a flat tummy.

As is true for most surgical procedures, different techniques must be used for different patients.  For example, if your main problem is mild laxity of the abdominal wall below the belly button with minimal skin excess, then a mini-tummy tuck will suffice.  This procedure concentrates primarily on tightening the lower abdominal wall, and it does not require repositioning of the belly button.  If on the other hand, you suffer from laxity of the entire abdominal wall, then the entire wall must be repaired in order to achieve the desired result.  This usually requires the repositioning of the belly button since most of the skin below the belly button must be removed.

The results of this surgery are visible almost immediately; however, it may take several months before you can see the final result due to swelling, which is natural.  Your new profile with a firm and flat abdomen is relatively permanent, so long as you maintain your weight and general fitness.

This “Mommy Makeover” procedure can be performed in the privacy of our outpatient surgical facility which is fully accredited and has a private entrance to preserve your privacy.

How old do I need to be to have a rhinoplasty?

The American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery’s most recent survey states the most common procedure performed for age 18 and under is rhinoplasty (nose reshaping surgery).  Also, mentioned in the survey were laser hair removal, microdermabrasion, chemical peels and otoplasty (ear reshaping).

We generally recommend that our patients wait until they are at least 14 or 15 years old and possibly older for boys, before undergoing rhinoplasty because the nose may not be fully developed.

During the consultation, we will ask you to look in the mirror and point out exactly what you would like to see improved.  This will help us to understand your expectations and determine whether they can realistically be achieved.  We will also assess your skin quality as well as the size and shape of the nose and its relationship to other facial features.  In some instances, we may recommend surgery of the chin, making it either more or less prominent to improve facial balance.  This can be performed at the same time as the rhinoplasty.  Our goal will be to make sure the nose looks natural and blends harmoniously with other facial features.

We can perform rhinoplasty in our fully accredited surgical facility with a private entrance to protect patient confidentialty or in an outpatient surgery facility at one of the local hospitals, whichever you prefer.  During the consultation, we can discuss at length the surgery procedure, recovery and what to expect after surgery.  We can also check your insurance company to inquire about possible coverage for your surgery.  Our goal is to make any surgical experience as easy and comfortable for everyone.

You can check out the website under surgical procedures for additional information on this procedure.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE BOARD CERTIFIED?

Board certification is a formal recognition of the highest qualifications in a chosen medical field, and is given only to physicians who have passed examinations before specialty boards comprised of their professional peers.  Board Certified physicians have been highly trained and tested in their areas of medicine.

To become a board certified plastic surgeon is a difficult task.  A physician must complete a specialized post-graduate training course of five to seven years.  Background training usually includes a thorough grounding in General Surgery, however a background in ENT or Orthopedics may be acceptable.  The final two to three years of training must be in an approved plastic surgery training center.  Prior to official certification by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, a physician must pass a rigorous set of both written and oral examinations.   While numerous physicians use the term “plastic” surgeons only those certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery are true plastic surgeons.  It does not stop there, after receiving their Board Certification,  plastic surgeons have to regularly attend medical education courses and have to adhere to a strict code of ethics.  Undergoing this stringent and extensive process in order to become a board certified plastic surgeon, you know your surgeon is dedicated to his or her craft.

Dr. Herrold is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and maintains his board certification in General Surgery.  He is a member of the American Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons and the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons.
